G-Star Raw at New York Fashion Week

The New York Fashion Week is probably the biggest event on the fashion calender. Everyone who is anyone is there - including the world's top models, designers and of course, celebrity admirers. And the ultra cool denim brand G-Star Raw made a real mark by combining the aesthetically stylish but sometimes shallow fashion world with ethical and charitable aspirations. G-Star Raw used its show in New York to tell the audience about the UN Millennium Development Goals.

As the Western world becomes more aware of ethics, the ecology and the need to eliminate poverty, fashion has taken on a conscious. And G-Star Raw instructed celebrities to read out the UN Millennium Development Goals to introduce their Spring 2008 collection. On behalf of G-Star Raw, actors Alan Cumming and Heather Graham strutted their stuff on the catwalk in G-Star Raw outfits, reciting the eight social and economic goals set by the United Nations that the international organisation aims to fulfil by 2015. Both Graham and Cumming are ambassadors for the campaign. The goals include increasing education for all, minimising the spread of AIDS and eliminating poverty.

The actual fashion show for G-Star Raw was as expected, theatrical with a moving runway. The show was dubbed 'intense' as flashing lights and bass music pumped through the audience with a rising staircase in the middle of the runway. It was clearly as much a spectacle as the G-Star Raw Spring 2009 collection. The collection has been dubbed by G-Star Raw designers as 'raw luxury', with denim, mini dresses, chinos and trench coats dominating. The label is renowned for the success of its jeans. Manager Styling Director and G-Star designer Pauline Barendregt told the press: "We are denim specialists and we would like to bring luxury to the streets."

After the catwalk show, celebrities and high profile guests were invited to an after-show party. The guest list included actor Josh Lucas and Ugly Betty star Eric Mabius. G-Star Raw proved that they continue to make regular day-to-day clothing into luxurious must-have items. G-Star Raw jeans are one of the most sought-after designer brands in the world.
